Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women

9 p.m. Saturday, August 22. Blueberry Hill's Duck Room, 6504 Delmar Boulevard, University City.

With the Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women project, the ex-Blasters' transformation from blues and rockabilly guitar poet to sensitive, story-spinning folkie is complete. Or is it? Alvin's new, mostly acoustic collaboration with slide guitarist Cindy Cashdollar, former Kate Wolf guitarist Nina Gerber, bluegrass veteran Laurie Lewis and a crème de la roots crème rhythm section of Lisa Pankratz and Sarah Brown, is as tight, lively and rocking as anything he's recorded since his Blasters heyday. Alvin is shrewd enough to share the vocal spotlight with Christy McWilson (formerly of the Picketts) and Amy Farris (of Kelly Willis' band, among others) and sly enough to let the angels have their expert, graceful way with his distinctive brand of rock & roll poetry.
