Bugs are a tricky subject. When bees are pollinating the world, we consider them friendly; when you wake up to a spider on your pillow, the friendship is over. Insects play a vital role in the ecosystem, but they can wreak havoc on crops, homes and your sense of well-being. We genuinely can't live without 'em, but sometimes it's awfully hard to live with 'em. Harry's Big Adventure: My Bug World, the interactive exhibition at the Saint Louis Science Center (5050 Oakland Avenue; 314-289-4400 or www.slsc.org), offers kids (and brave adults) a chance to get up close and personal with our buggy neighbors. Insect habitats -- forest, meadows and a life-size house -- show how insects live and what they do all day, and special weekend activities such as a bug petting zoo and cricket spitting competitions (!) offer more intimate experiences. Harry's Big Adventure is open daily through Monday, January 20, 2014; tickets are $2 to $7.
