Creative Class

Making art work for our youth

Teens usually aren’t given enough credit. Society labels them as TV-watching, cell-phone-talking, friend-obsessed, pop-culture hounds, and while those descriptors may fit some kids (and adults, for that matter) some of the time, young people often have ideas and thoughts by the dozen that are worth knowing — if only we offered them a way to express themselves. Thanks to St. Louis ArtWorks, at least some of our community’s teens are given an artistic outlet during the course of paid apprenticeships. These ArtWorks students are mentored by local working artists in disciplines such as printmaking, painting, sculpture and dance, and much of their work is commissioned by various groups and companies around town. To see what these young people have been up to this summer in addition to their commissioned work, drop by the St. Louis ArtWorks Final Sale from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Commerce Bank Education Center (4651 Shaw Boulevard). Art collectors will be able to peruse about 600 pieces that are available for purchase — prices range from $15 to $80! — as well as meet the creative young minds behind the art.
