Gentle readers, are you intrigued by the unexplained geometric shapes cut into corn fields throughout the English countryside? How about a mysterious crop circle in the shape of a cowboy lassoing a horse -– but much closer to home? No foolin’. Friday, August 31, marks the official kickoff for the eighth season of the Great Godfrey Corn Maze (1401 Stamper Lane, Godfrey, Illinois; 618-466-1483 or www.greatgodfreymaze.com). “Cowboys of the Wild West” is this year's theme, and it ought to be a real humdinger of a hoedown. In addition to marveling at the requisite 5:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony that officially opens the maze, you can take the kids on a wagon ride, get their faces painted, and enjoy an outdoor screening of that animated classic of cowpoke ennui, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West. And to ensure things begin with a bang, revelers can fire off a real live corn cannon before entering the sinuous paths of the maze itself. Speaking of which, the maze is open from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 1 p.m. to dusk on Sunday through October 28. Tickets are $4 to $6.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: Aug. 31. Continues through Oct. 28, 2007
