Color Us Jolly

Many children fell in love with chalk art the minute "Jolly Holiday" Bert created a temporary artwork so magical that Mary Poppins and her charges could jump right inside for a lovely afternoon in the countryside. Though our own driveway masterpieces never resulted in such a fantastic break from the bike-riding, trampoline-jumping stressors of our childhood, we're thinking that the chances for magic, albeit of a slightly different sort, are far greater at the Delmar Loop's third annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Festival ( Held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and centering around the Chuck Berry statue (6555 Delmar Boulevard, University City), this outdoor party affords artists the chance to compete for best picture in one of four categories -- there's even space for kids to show off their visions. It will cost you $6 to $10 to register to draw, depending on your age, but spectating, oooh-ing and aaah-ing are free. We just don't recommend jumping onto (into?) anyone's piece uninvited -- a jolly holiday could turn into a trip to feed the birds, if you know what we're sayin'.
