Color Us Happy

Sometimes life feels bland, colorless, same-old same-old. You find yourself hanging out with the same people, dining at the same restaurants, driving the same way to work, and on and on. Even your house and your wardrobe suffer from drab, nondescript shades and staid comfortableness. What you need is an infusion of vibrancy, of playfulness, of loud, showy, colorful color — and the upcoming exhibition at the phd gallery (2300 Cherokee Street; 314-664-6644 or has just the punch of pigment you crave. A Lifetime of Color features art by James Riddle, who used enough hues in his works on paper to brighten and inspire even the most lackluster life. The pieces vary in their stylistic influences, offering something for all kinds of art-lovers, which is a good thing because every work in the show — there are nearly 150! — will be up for sale this weekend, with the proceeds benefiting the Metropolitan Community Church of Greater Saint Louis. The opening reception for A Lifetime of Color ($10) runs from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, August 27, with a VIP event ($50) preceding it from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The exhibition remains up through Sunday, September 5, and is on view during regular gallery hours (noon to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday).
