Close, But No Oscar

The Academy Awards are finally settled, but just because the statues have been handed out doesn't mean the debate is over. In fact, nothing is settled until Sharknado gets its just due, hombre -- but that's a topic for another day. Part of the joy of movies is arguing about our favorites, and this month the St. Louis Public Library celebrates great films that didn't win Best Picture. Such as, for example, Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's an acknowledged masterpiece of science fiction and of cinema, but there was no Best Picture Oscar waiting at the end of its long, psychedelic journey; those apes would have just thrown it at the monolith anyway. 2001 screens tonight at 6:30 p.m., in the auditorium of the Central branch of the St. Louis Public Library (1301 Olive Street; 314-241-2288 or www.slpl.org). Admission is free.
