City of Film Makers

Let the rest of the world hold its collective breath for the latest ponderous snooze to win the Palme D'or at Cannes, St. Louis has its own summer film tradition. The St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase returns Sunday through Thursday (July 14 through18), celebrating homegrown motion pictures. Every flick shown at the festival was made in, about or by someone from the St. Louis area and probably includes more references to frozen custard, westward expansion or the filmmaker's high school of origin per hour than any other film festival on the planet. Opening day features Something in the Water: A St. Louis Rockumentary, Kathy Bratkowski's comprehensive documentary about the St. Louis music scene in the '70s. Something in the Water screens at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Tivoli Theatre (6350 Delmar Boulevard, University City), and tickets are $10 to $12.
