Chris Corsano

7:30 p.m. Saturday, January 28. Kranzberg Arts Center, 501 North Grand Boulevard.

Chris Corsano is a versatile drummer whose improvisations incorporate both frenzied energy and subtle shaping of sound, sometimes augmenting or preparing his kit with household objects like kitchen utensils, metal bowls and wooden blocks. Originally from New England, Corsano has become part of an international community of collaborators, performing and recording with dozens of different musicians in the USA, Japan, Great Britain and elsewhere, including Icelandic pop star Bjork, Wilco's Nels Cline and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore. For his concert here as part of the New Music Circle, Corsano will be joined by two St. Louis musicians with plenty of free improv experience, bassist Darin Gray and saxophonist Dave Stone.

Why it Matters: Percussionist known for daring free improv also has rocked out with Bjork and members of Wilco and Sonic Youth.
