Built as the St. Louis Theater, what we call Powell Hall (718 North Grand Boulevard; 314-534-1700 or www.slso.org) opened in 1925, the same year Universal Studio's The Phantom Of The Opera sent audiences fleeing the movie houses in fear at the sight of Lon Chaney's skull-featured Phantom. Chaney, the man of a thousand faces, painted his eye sockets black, pulled up the tip of his nose, and with a set of gruesome false teeth, created one of the most memorable movie monsters in film history. This Friday and Saturday (October 28 and 29), the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra casts aside the frothy nonsense of Andrew Lloyd Webber's version and returns Powell Hall to its cinematic roots with a screening of the silent horror classic. The mighty SLSO, accompanied by pianist Rick Friend, provides the live soundtrack under the direction of conductor Ward Stare. The lights go down at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $28 to $55.
