Chartres the Course

It's old-fashioned fun

by

As anyone who's toured Europe knows, having a look at some old stuff is fun. Sitting on a bench that's older than your country, visiting buildings that have been standing for centuries, viewing artwork created during the Renaissance — these are some old-timey good times. But all of these activities are so, well, passive. You don't get a feel for how people really lived while doing any of them. And, more important, you don't get a great idea of how people truly dressed — and that's ever so imperative. Good thing it's time for the 38th annual Fort de Chartres Rendezvous. During this two-day event (Saturday and Sunday, June 7 and 8), not only do you get to see some restored and rebuilt old buildings (the powder magazine structure was first erected in the early 1700s by the French), but you also can check out more than 1,000 folks in period costumes! And hear fife and drum corps! And watch cannon-firing demonstrations every hour! And much, much more! To learn additional details about the festival, which is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., call 618-284-7230 or visit www.ftdechartres.com. The fort is located at 1350 State Route 155 in Prairie du Rocher, Illinois, and there is a $5-per-car parking charge.
