"Ah, there she is: cucurbita pepo. The pumpkin. Ain't she beautiful? [Caresses pumpkin.] There's a good girl. This one 'ere looks about a year old, but some farmers grow 'em until they're over 1,000 pounds! Crikey!"
It's been an unfortunate year for hunters. Dick Cheney peppered his buddy with birdshot, and we'll likely never hear the preceding monologue from the spin-off show The Pumpkin Hunter. Fortunately, adults 21 and older can star in their own version of TPH at 6:30 p.m. at the Great Golden Pumpkin Hunt in Carondelet Park (Leona Avenue and Holly Hills Boulevard; meet at Picnic Stand #1 on the Loughborough Avenue side of the park). Prizes are awarded for each pumpkin that's found in the park, and the master scavenger who finds the Great Golden Pumpkin gets $500. So go ahead and bring your flashlight, mate. Food and drinks are included in your $30 ticket price, and proceeds benefit Rebuilding Together-St. Louis, a nonprofit that rehabs houses for the needy. Call 314-918-9918, extension 24, for tickets or more information.
