Cancer Bats

7 p.m. Monday, March 17. 2 Cents Plain, 1114 Olive Street

Cancer Bats may have one of the dumbest band names of all time, but judging by the Toronto quintet's monstrous metal riffs and aggressive lyrics, it's not the smartest move to tell them so. Formed in 2004, the band released both an EP and a full-length (the simultaneously impassioned and vicious Birthing the Giant) within a year and a half. Both harnessed the speed of punk and the progressive idealism of hardcore; the road-warrior mentality is just a bonus. Judging by the title track currently posted on Cancer Bats' MySpace page, April's Hail Destroyer will deliver more of the same — and then some.
