College campuses are indelibly linked with wine, women and song, and even though it's summertime, those concepts are celebrated tonight at Washington University, although perhaps not in the manner you'd expect. The Gateway Festival Orchestra celebrates its 50th year with the program Aire of Romance. That's Romance with a capital R, signifying the big, bold hearts of the Romantic movement, and Johann Strauss' waltz Wine, Woman and Song is part of the festivities. Also included in the performance are Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2 (also known as his Romantic symphony) and Beethoven's Romance in F Major for Violin and Orchestra. Samantha Lord is the soloist for the latter, while Cathleen Woelbling-Paul does the solo honors in John Thomas' Jazz Romanza for English Horn and String Orchestra. As always, the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. in Washington University's Brookings Quadrangle (Brookings and Hoyt drives; www.gatewayfestivalorchestra.org), and admission is free.
