Calling Captain Caveman (and Woman)

Back in the olden days, when people had to read for entertainment and there was nary an electronic device in sight, folks explored caves as a way to fulfill their adventure cravings, discover cool creatures and escape the summer heat. Of course, caves still boast all of these fantastic amenities, and, lucky for you, we live in a particularly cave-rich part of the country. To get back to your spelunking roots, take a drive down I-44 to Meramec Caverns (off exit 230 in Stanton; www.americascave.com). But instead of moseying along on one of the fancy, electricity-enhanced tours, you can go especially old-school on Friday and Saturday (June 29 and 30) by signing up for a Lantern Cave Tour. These 80-minute excursions will introduce you to characters from the past and offer a glimpse into way, way back when, all by the light of handheld lanterns. Olden days, indeed! Lantern Cave Tours cost $12 to $24, and reservations are required; call 573-468-2283 to save your spot (you know, the Pony Express is just so unreliable for reservations these days).
