Buyer Be Aware

Artists have to spend a great deal of time in their own heads, conceiving and assessing before they can make anything. Then they have to bring those concepts into the world, often through trial and error. And once the solitary, aesthetic portion of their job is completed, they have to become businesspeople, or at the least salesmen of their own wares. Various methods have been developed to lessen the unwieldy commercial burden of the artist, from wealthy patron to gallery system to studio/factory set-ups. In the internet age, one of the more creative options is the subscription system. Artists become publishers, creating their works for an audience that has already paid up front. A Modest Proposal, the new exhibition at The Luminary Temporary Gallery (2664 Cherokee Street;, showcases subscription-service works from The Thing Quarterly out of San Francisco, Community Supported Art Philadelphia and Chicago's Regional Relationships. The show opens with a free public reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, March 15. The work remains on display through Friday, April 12, and the gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday.
Wednesdays-Saturdays. Starts: March 15. Continues through April 12, 2013
