Madame Butterfly /i> explained

Someone we know — no names, please — was horribly embarrassed during an initial opera experience when this anonymous neophyte asked his neighbor, "So, when does Monsieur Butterfly show up?" Ah, the shame of that faux pas still stings. Learn from our — that is, his — mistake, and do a little bit of research before you head out to the theater. Opera Theatre of Saint Louis is here to assist you with its Spotlight Opera Lecture Series, a series of discussions that will enhance your appreciation of OTSL's upcoming season. Each lecture features conductors and directors addressing the show, with young performers from the ensemble providing musical excerpts that further bring out the nuances of the opera. The first installment focuses on Puccini's Madame Butterfly, and it takes place at 7:30 p.m. this evening at Webster University's Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-961-0644 or www.opera-stl.org). Admission is $30 for the entire series of lectures or $10 for each individual lecture.
