Books: No Batteries Required

If you're reading this little event preview in the newspaper and not from a glowing screen somewhere in the universe, then we don't have to tell you the intrinsic value of the printed word, whether on newsprint or in a hardbound book. There's something about the feel of the paper and the smell of the ink that helps set a scene for reading, and imagination, and thoughtful consideration. Sure, valuable words are displayed through all kinds of media, but books feel the most important because of their permanence. To honor books' staying power and to update and renew your collection, don't miss the Jewish Community Center's Used Book Sale, held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday (August 29 through September 1). (There's also a special preview day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, that costs $10 to attend, and beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 2, you can fill a bag with books for $5.) At the sale, held in the Arts & Education building at the Jewish Community Center Staenberg Family Complex (2 Millstone Campus Drive, Creve Coeur; www.jccstl.com), expect most titles to be priced cheaper than $3, with special publications going for a bit more -- what a steal! Expect also to see nearly every topic represented, from cookbooks to biographies.
