Bobby's World

In the words of children, we can find a sense of truth. The little ones have a way of stating the facts, and just the facts, so as to make their straightforward reality and more-than-occasional insights quite compelling. Perhaps this perceptive veracity is what drew artists Gina Alvarez and Jana Harper to a child's poetry book for inspiration. For Poems by Bobby Thiel, a new exhibition at the Sheldon Art Galleries (3648 Washington Boulevard; 314-533-9900 or, Alvarez and Harper used the titles of the verses as jumping off points to create collaborative print works that incorporate color, photos and other elements. In addition to this exhibition, the Sheldon opens several other new shows, including Colors of Hope: Artwork From the Children's Art Village, featuring works by children in art therapy around the world, Trier/St. Louis/Denver — A Jewish Artist's Fate and The Synagogue Murals, both of which showcase works by Max Lazarus; and Attraction and Desire — 50 Years in Photography, highlighting Larry Fink's images. All of the aforementioned exhibitions open with a free public reception held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, February 18, and Poems by Bobby Thiel remains on view Tuesday through Saturday through Saturday, June 4.
