Timmy Cleary headed off to WWII a boy but came home a man, swearing and drinking and dreaming of being a writer. But home is also where his parents are, and as many newly minted adults find, Timmy discovers it's difficult to be an adult in your childhood home. His mother disapproves of his rough ways and his father is still not quite impressed with Timmy — and then there's all the bickering his parents do. Who's to blame for the familial strife? None of them, and all of them. That's life, stifling and surprising in its twists. In Frank D. Gilroy's drama The Subject Was Roses, there is no place like home. The Avalon Theatre Company christens its new theater, ArtSpace at Crestwood Court (Watson and Sappington roads, Crestwood; 314-351-6482 or www.avalontheatre.org), with The Subject Was Roses at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday (February 6 through 15). Tickets are $18 to $25.
