Birth Pangs

Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone's 1776 dared to go where no other musical would: inside Independence Hall in the propitious year of 1776, when our nation's forefathers were arguing, bickering and occasionally fist-fighting about the issue of declaring independence from England. At the center of the fighting is John Adams, who is a vocal proponent of independence but also supremely unlikable, so he can't make any headway. Maybe if he gets the popular Richard Henry Lee and the eloquent Thomas Jefferson to do some heavy lifting for him, he'll get his way after all, eh? Insight Theatre Company presents 1776 at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday (June 26 through July 7), but note that there is no show on Thursday, July 4. Performances take place at the Heagney Theatre on the Nerinx Hall campus (530 East Lockwood Avenue; 314-556-1293 or www.insighttheatrecompany.org). Tickets are $25 to $30.
Tuesdays-Sundays; July 5-7. Starts: June 26. Continues through July 3, 2013
