Beyond Ballet

Dance isn't merely a way for choreographers to express themselves through movement. In fact, sometimes movement itself first informs the work of the dancer who then shares that message with the audience. Such is the case with Stamping Ground. Choreographer Jiří Kylián studied Australian aboriginal dance and sought to bring his interpretation of that unique approach to movement to the stage. The resulting piece evokes the relationship we all have to the earth and the heavens above, and though it's nearly 30 years old, Stamping Ground remains relevant today. The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet performs Kylián's work, along with Jorma Elo's Over Glow and Norbert De La Cruz III's Square None (which was commissioned by St. Louisan Dr. Dan Luedke for his wife, Susan), at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the University of Missouri-St. Louis campus (1 University Drive at Natural Bridge Road).
