Let the joggers puff and pant and blow their knees out; we'll take the snail's pace any day. Finding a good place to stroll in St. Louis is easy, but here's one wonderful route: Start at the northeast corner of Tower Grove Park (South Grand Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue) and head west on Magnolia. It's a cityscape in stereo: the green rhythm bed of the fine old park on your left, a rising melody of houses, ranging from modest to grand, on your right. You have the best of both worlds here, the natural and the built, courtesy of Tower Grove's stately oaks and the stolid yet graceful masonry of vintage St. Louis architecture. At Tower Grove Avenue midway through the park, hang a right. Pick any of the next several streets for your return leg eastward back to Grand. The Shaw neighborhood is a vision, both complete and in-the-making. Some homes are gutted; most have been rehabbed or are awaiting TLC. Before you know it you'll be back where you started, having explored your living city at stroll speed -- a clip that's good for body and soul.
