Fairy-tale time: Many years ago, in a land not so far from here, a spinach leaf met an artichoke, and they hit it off. You see, in the vegetable kingdom, size doesn't matter, so although Madame Artichoke was much larger than Sir Spinach, he could not resist her big heart. After an old-fashioned courtship, these two lovebirds got hitched. But things didn't always work out, intervegetably speaking: Sometimes the relationship was cheesy, sometimes mushy. Spinach could be domineering, artichoke tough. But this wouldn't be a fairy tale if there wasn't a happy ending. The epitome of a successful union can be found at Caf Balaban, where the spinach-artichoke couple is baked to perfection with just the right amount of brown around the edges, then served with the tastiest cheesy herbed flatbreads. And we lived happily ever after. The end.
