Best Soul Food Restaurant

Sweetie Pie's

One could, in theory, head to Sweetie Pie's location in the Grove neighborhood any day just for the sides: cabbage flavored with smoky bacon, tangy mac & cheese, thick yams, black-eyed peas and generous hunks of cornbread. But you might find a specific day especially mouthwatering, for at this most holy chapel of cafeteria-style soul food, the main courses rotate weekly. Grand matron Robbie Montgomery (a former backup singer for Ike and Tina Turner) does cook up wings, chops and steaks every day. But her lovely ladies in white aprons and hairnets could also dish you up short ribs on Tuesday; neck bones and beef liver on Wednesday; oxtails and meat loaf on Thursday; catfish or buffalo (the fish) on Friday; and roast beef and turkey for a nice Sunday repast. Wash it all down with a beverage brought to your table while you gaze at the giant mural of St. Louis people and places on the wall. Portions are enormous, but you've got time. Relax beneath the lazily twirling ceiling fans and let your contented belly do the work.
