Every time you leave Missouri Running Co., you depart knowing more about running than you did when you came in. After all, it's hard not to learn something when you talk with the unabashed running junkies behind the store formerly known as Ghisallo Running and Marathon Sports. "We can spend a lot of time with a customer — some customers might think too long," co-founder/co-owner Jim Hixon says. It's worth listening to the personable staff: Hixon's long-standing belief that bulky shoes lead to more injuries than flexible models is gaining acceptance, thanks to the popularity of Christopher McDougall's similarly minded book Born to Run. You can expect to find plenty of these sleeker shoes at Missouri Running Co., along with an assortment of running clothing, equipment and energy food. The University City location also boasts a treadmill on which to test out your potential new kicks and a train set to keep your kids busy. A second area location keeps Chesterfield running; there's also an outpost in Cape Girardeau.
