Nestled at the far left end of the radio dial, KDHX (88.1 FM) is almost too easily taken for granted. But after 22 years on the air, the city's only community radio station continues to be as stubbornly quirky and independent as St. Louis itself. The two-hour blocks programmed by its volunteers transcend (and cross) genres; at any given hour, you can hear shows dedicated to rock, electronica, blues, jazz, metal, hip-hop, reggae, folk or soul. (And forget about mainstream machinations — with album cuts and obscurities in rotation, the tracks you hear are firmly left of center.) Talk shows with a local flair and unwavering aid of local musicians — from having them play at the Tower Grove Farmers' Market to featuring them at the annual Midwest Mayhem concert — further underscore the station's support for creative souls. In recent years KDHX's commitment to St. Louis is drawing some serious attention outside the city: In 2007 the station was one of five in the nation to receive an ongoing Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) Station Renewal Project grant in order to help it increase its audience and continue serving the community.
