You can try to hang a label on Phaseone (known to his mama as Andrew Jernigan), but it's a fool's errand. His mixtapes have garnered praise on Pitchfork and elsewhere for their juxtapositions of Aphex Twin, J Dilla and Fleetwood Mac. Likewise, his remixes of Animal Collective and Bloc Party have blazed across P2P networks. Phaseone has proven himself to be an inventive tweaker of others' work, but his own instrumental compositions encompass moody synth-scapes, chest-thumping hip-hop beats and dusty soul samples. Phaseone's ecumenical tastes have led him to share the stage with funk, soul and DJ acts, but he remains beautifully, wonderfully hard to pin down.
