For the most part, Larry J's is like many old-school taverns on the south side: regulars sit glued to the Cardinals game as they polish off buckets of Bud Light, packs of cigs (yes, smoking is still permitted here) and the occasional TJ's pizza. But where Larry J's sets itself apart is in its impressive game room in back, the highlight of which is the electronic dartboards. It's all the soft-tip variety at Larry J's, and the bar attracts some of the best throwers around. (Proof of that can be found on the award plaques lining the walls.) Each week some twenty teams shoot off at Larry J's with Thursday night being the busiest. But even on league nights, it's still possible to get on one of the tavern's eight dartboards. And don't worry if you left your darts at home; Larry J's has loaners behind the bar. For a cheap thrill, stop by on Friday nights when proprietor Larry J. turns on all the dartboards for free. Or — if you're feeling competitive — come in on Saturday night for the bar's popular blind-draw darts tournament.
