As America wages wars on two fronts, Lambert Field can at times seem like the U.S. Army's Central Command, with as many as 3,000 soldiers passing through the airport during any given week. Most of these warriors touch down in our fair city for just a few minutes. Others have considerably more time to kill between flights and will eventually make their way to Lambert's USO lounge. Located adjacent to the M-6 baggage carousel, the lounge is the world's second-largest USO facility inside a commercial airport. And while it's only open to military personnel and their families, a good deal of these soldiers (mostly male, mostly single) can be found milling about outside the USO looking for one last hurrah before flying off to some faraway hellhole to fight for our freedom. Thursdays and Fridays make for particularly good pickings, as 700 to 800 Army recruits arrive at Lambert on their way to (or from) basic training at Fort Leonard Wood.
