Tucked away on South Broadway just south of Lafayette Avenue lies Billie's Fine Foods, which is rapidly becoming a favorite among nocturnal sustenance seekers in the Soulard area. The joint is distinctively old-school: lunch counter, ample table and booth seating, Cardinals memorabilia adorning the walls. Think Mel's Diner (if you're old enough, that is). With the exception of a few specialty dishes, such as catfish and meat loaf, the menu is standard diner fare, more or less. All the staples of post-midnight piehole stuffing are present, from burgers to sandwiches to desserts, and there are plenty of breakfast items — including that belly-bombing St. Louis icon, the slinger. Billie's cheap prices and fair portions are capped off by excellent service; the staff is friendly and attentive, and the food is served remarkably fast. When the conversation dies down, you can divert your attention over to the random DVDs that play on a television mounted on the wall — anything from a classic splatter flick to the latest Kevin Costner flop.
