Best Picnic Spot

The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House

There are tables and benches in every direction you spin in Faust Park, plus a shelter, playground, footbridge and fountain spraying forth from within a pond. There's even a giant concrete butterfly and counterpart giant caterpillar munching on his own giant-concrete-leaf lunch nearby. So plop your paper plates down just about anywhere near the Butterfly House (watch out for goose poo) and devour your deviled eggs with al fresco flair. Afterward, stroll through that tropical butterfly abode ($6 admission) or the Historic Village's nineteenth-century blacksmithery, cabins and stables (free). Or fight to keep those eggs down while atop the horse (or deer) of your choice on the indoor St. Louis Carousel. After which, as a special (and peculiar) bonus, you can purchase your very own Lamb Chop puppet at the gift shop/gallery. Spirit of Shari Lewis not included.
