Cozy. Rustic. Understated. All these are words that could be used to charitably describe the building that previously housed KDHX (88.1 FM), St. Louis' beloved community radio station, for 26 years. A former bakery-turned- media-hub, the space was...well, add "adequate" to that list of descriptors. Not that it matters anymore — the station's prior location now seems lifetimes in the past, thanks to its new base of operations, the Larry J. Weir Center for Independent Media. Located in Grand Center, the building's purchase and extensive renovations cost upward of $3.5 million, and its 13,000 square feet is three times larger than the space KDHX previously inhabited. What words would best describe the new location? Massive. Impressive. State of the art. Futuristic, even. And for the work of the many DJs, volunteers and employees that takes place within its walls? Home.
