Good neighborhood bars don't have to be dives — they just have to be inviting, and it doesn't get much better than the Scottish Arms' cozy wooden interior. It is run by a Scottish national, Alastair Nisbet, and you'll want to make sure you're there when he is. Nisbet is known as a raconteur in the Central West End, a good listener and is wont to walk ladies to their cars after dark if need be. For a bar with one of the most (if not the most) expansive and impressive whiskey selections in Missouri, the Scottish Arms has great happy-hour specials, with Thursdays focused on single-malt whiskeys and drams for shot prices. Bartenders are dressed to the nines and will concoct a drink to fit your mood. There's a warm, Scottish-to-the-core food menu and a back patio which roars with laughter and bonfires late into the night.
