A Little Night Music

Last November, when Urinetown received a brilliant staging by the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, this paper wrote that "the bar has been raised for locally produced musicals." Without in any way tarnishing the memory of that glorious accomplishment, the nod here goes to Stages St. Louis' pitch-perfect production of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler confection A Little Night Music — for the simple reason that in its very first post-Urinetown offering, Stages St. Louis waltzed up to that newly raised bar and glided over it with a degree of grace and aplomb that resulted in an evening of ineffable loveliness. Add to this abundance of velvet professionalism the fact that A Little Night Music is seen so infrequently, and the Stages opener became a theater event of the highest order.
