As someone pithily observed long ago, the sport of golf is "a good walk spoiled." Anyone who has spent a few hours chasing a Titleist around various sand traps can attest to that. Miniature golf, however, offers such compact satisfaction that even the most errant putts can't spoil this little stroll. And so it's fitting that the Family Golf & Learning Center, itself a complex dedicated to the little white ball, has a space reserved for the young and young at heart. Its mini golf greens favor geometrical skill over loud, brightly colored attractions — the discerning putt-putt maestro must read the banks of sloped hills and navigate around rocks to sink that candy-colored golf ball in the hole. There's no missing the slightly shabby charm of the place, with its creaky water mill holding court over the water hazard and a Cinderella-esque castle overlooking the grounds. At $3.50 a round, it's an affordable and whimsical way to work on your short game, should you decide to someday spoil a good walk and head out to the facility's nine-hole par-three course.
