Big Muddy Records understands that there is a distinct musical identity hidden deep in the isolated back streets of south St. Louis. The records released by the small independent label are a microcosm of the type of music and attitude prevalent on these city streets. The label focuses on traditional rock & roll, but it doesn't rely on obvious retro throwback posturing. Its aim is to preserve the purest and most genuine aspects of bare-bones roots music for the purpose of propelling it forward and reaching new audiences. The result is a relevant sound that's rooted in the past but doesn't come off as petty anachronism, and a wide-ranging roster of artists — from, say, the glam-infused rockabilly of 7 Shot Screamers to the stripped-down, raunchy bluegrass of the Monads.
