For the second straight year, Riverfront Times has settled on Milagro Modern Mexican as our pick for Best Mexican Restaurant. It's no fluke, either. Milagro is more than a very good Mexican restaurant; it's a very good restaurant, period. Much of the credit belongs to chef Jason Tilford. His cooking isn't flashy, and neither is he. Content to let his brother, Adam, work the front of the house as Milagro's public face, Jason stays close to the stove, turning out terrific dishes that honor traditional, regional Mexican cuisine. He takes a similar tack at Barrister's, the Clayton restaurant he owns. Here Tilford doesn't try to reinvent American comfort food and British pub grub. He merely serves outstanding renditions of both. (Barrister's fish and chips are worthy of an ode unto themselves.) Heck, you may have eaten Tilford's food without even realizing it. He has helped develop the menus at several area restaurants, including brother Adam's fast-casual Mexican joint Tortillaria as well as Kota Wood Fire Grill. If you haven't eaten at one of Tilford's restaurants, you should. And if you have enjoyed his cooking, then by all means it's time you knew his name.
