By now, Jilly's Cupcake Bar & Cafe is no stranger to winning awards for its not-so-subtle cupcake flavors with tongue-twister descriptions and over-the-top filling-and-frosting combinations. In June, the two-time Cupcake Wars winner expanded its sweets reach by opening up Jilly's Ice Cream Bar next door. The concept makes a marriage of the long-time love affair between cake and ice cream. Scoop up decadent takes on classics including "Va-Va-Vanilla," "Chocolate Fudge Swirl" or "Browned Butter Pecan" served in cupcake-batter waffle cones. Or opt for something from the "Jilly's Cupcake Inspiration" column of the menu — these come loaded up with the works. Beyond the regular rotation, the colorful ice-cream parlor also features monthly specials created by in-house pastry chef Casey Shiller. Our favorite so far? The "My Lucky Charm" made with cereal milk, strawberry-wafer pearls and Lucky Charms' freeze-dried marshmallows. If that sounds outrageous, just check out one of the regular menu items: The "24 Karat Cake" features carrot-cake and cream-cheese ice cream studded with carrot-cake morsels, a cream cheese icing swirl, sugar-roasted walnuts, toasted coconut and 24-karat gold-dusted white chocolate shavings. With elaborate concoctions such as these, it goes without saying that Jilly's is in it to win it.
