Joe Edwards, the unofficial mayor of the Delmar Loop, has always been known to shoot for the moon with his development projects. But who knew he'd take the metaphor so literally? As soon as Edwards placed a rotating moon sculpture atop an old funeral home at the eastern end of the Loop in April 2009, the hipness quotient of local hotels multiplied by 100. The Moonrise Hotel's lobby glows with iridescent light. The expansive rooftop bar, with its sweeping view of downtown St. Louis, beckons. Staff is attentive, rooms are comfortable, and the dining and entertainment options within just a few blocks are plentiful. Visiting friends and in-laws will love the boutique amenities at St. Louis prices (standard rooms are $159 to $189; rooms with Jacuzzis cost $199 to $239). Heck, a trip to the Edwards galaxy would even make a great staycation.
