Best High School Athlete

Arthur Sargent

Arthur Sargent looks like a natural. A lean, mean, six-foot-five machine with lock-cable upper-arm muscles, Sargent is one of only a handful of local athletes -- perhaps the only one, at that -- who will generate interest among Big 10 and Big 12 schools in both football and basketball, so outstanding a multi-sport athlete is he. (He also high-jumps six feet, eight inches.) His bloodline helps: Arthur Sr. was an All-American defensive back at East St. Louis High in the 1980s. But papa lacked his wide-receiver son's honey-sweet stroke from the three-point line once it comes time to shed the pads for short shorts and sneakers. Off-court, Sargent (Class of '05) is a card, toweling off with lunch napkins after his AAU team won its last game at the prestigious Peach Jam tournament in Augusta, Georgia, this past July. Sargent takes nothing too seriously, but he's seriously good at most everything. In a day and age when preps-to-pro is de rigueur, Sargent's attitude epitomizes teen sports as they should be: fun and games.
