Murder, a lawsuit and a lot of bad blood. It's not exactly the sort of drama that's good for business, but four years after the tragic death of its owner, Gyro House is still going strong, serving up the city's favorite Greek eats. The fast-casual restaurant has been a mainstay of the Delmar Loop dining scene, first located around the corner from Blueberry Hill, and now across the street from the Pageant. When original owner Ahmed Eltawmi was gunned down outside of his apartment in 2010, his long-time employees moved the operation to its current digs east of Skinker Boulevard. Though Eltawmi is no longer there to oversee the cooking, the food is still fantastic — just like it was in the old days. Tender, seasoned gyro meat is still heaped on soft pita and smothered with thick, creamy tzatziki sauce. The salads are fresh, the spanakopita is overstuffed, and the kabob platters are filled with tender meat. The patriarch may have passed, but Gyro House proves that his legacy remains.
