Best Gay Bar

The Bastille

comment
Weary of oiling up his Rollerblades and flexing his pecs, Gaylord von Gayenstein, River City man's man about town, just needs a cold beer and a big ol' Reuben sandwich. But where to go amid a gay-bar landscape dominated by drum and bass? Easy: The Bastille, a tastefully decorated Soulard hangout that (along with Clementine's down the street) smartly balances out the easterly island's more hoosieriffic tendencies with many a queer eye. To be sure, Bastille can bump -- Kylie Minogue remixes are no stranger to the bar's outdoor speaker. Yet for Von Gayenstein, the ambiance at this sophisticated Soulard mainstay, open six days a week till 1:30 a.m. (and on Sundays till midnight), never gets too obnoxious. Shirts stay on, drinks are drunk, and a peaceful respite is achieved. (Not to mention a fine corned beef on rye.)
