Ted Drewes' frozen custard is great. Actually it's some of the best in the country, and this isn't a news flash. The creamy summertime treat (well, some of us can eat it in the dead of winter) is as St. Louis as Cardinal baseball and that shiny curved monument that sits on the riverfront. It's not like anyone really takes the frozen-custard spot for granted — the near-constant lines out to Chippewa attest to its enduring popularity. The thing is, it's so wonderful that it's obvious, and year after year, it gets passed over for the Best Frozen Custard accolade. Not this year! Spreading the love is great, but sometimes it's important to honor the master. Ted Drewes' classic vanilla is the gold standard: rich and frothy like frozen silk. Its concrete concoctions are so legendary, they've become part of the city's lexicon — who doesn't know what a "Terramizzou" is? This is the face of St. Louis frozen custard.
