Hodak's is home to a winning (and heartburn-inducing) St. Louis combination: fried chicken, Budweiser beer and Cardinals baseball. Since it was founded in 1962, the restaurant has changed locations and been through more facelifts than Joan Rivers, but it has maintained its old-school charm as well as its status as the go-to spot for dynamite fried chicken. The reason is obvious as soon as the food arrives: Thick, breaded skin comes out a perfect blend of crunchy and chewy. The grease is not excessive, lending taste and texture, and the pieces are huge, juicy and packed with flavor. Sides like baked beans and coleslaw are served with a generous hand. There's a good reason St. Louisans have been returning to bust their belt buckles at Hodak's for more than five decades, and there's every reason to expect it will be frying away well into the next five.
