While at a recent Demon Lover show, marveling once more at the thump and purr coming out of Sam Meyer's drum kit, we found a local electronic artist doing the same thing. He told us about the time he was playing an improvised set with Meyer and became so entranced by the drummer next to him that he absently stopped playing altogether, leaving the worst solo instrument there is to carry the show for a while. "Drum solo" may be a dirty phrase to many music fans, but doubtless the audience remained fixated. Meyer, who also holds down the kit for local blues-rock apocalypse Magic City, plays drums like it's his native language, and he never wastes a word. That same former Meyer collaborator put it another way: "Everything he does is just so tasty."
