The best kind of diners are the ones that haven't changed in decades. That's certainly the case at Carl's Drive-In, where owner Frank Cunetto has been slinging patties and serving housemade root beer since 1959. The eponymous Carl has since moved to Florida, but Cunetto makes sure every customer in the sixteen-seat restaurant is satisfied. The root beer is made daily from a recipe dating back to at least 1919, and it's poured from a barrel into a mug so frosty a small layer of ice forms at the top. The burgers — go ahead and get a double — are thin, juicy and crispy on the edges and pair perfectly with Carl's french fries. You'll be in and out in a jiffy, but once you squeeze out the door you'll already be looking forward to your next visit.
