Those eager to try standup have no shortage of open-mic options: O'Malley's in Benton Park, Fitz's in the Loop, Nick's Pub in Cheltenham. But if you're serious about doing comedy, Tuesday night's open-mic at the Funny Bone in Westport Plaza is the venue. For starters, it's a bona fide comedy club, with stage, lighting and seating set up specifically for the art form. Yet the most crucial element is the human one. There's much to learn from the wide variety of amateurs who hop onstage and bomb; there's even more to learn from the seasoned veterans who stop by to work through new material. One of those veterans is nationally touring headliner (and Kirkwood native) Greg Warren. Warren will tell you that what makes Tuesday nights at the Funny Bone great is the presence of Matt Behrens, the club's booker, who tries to recognize talent early. "That's unheard of — to have the guy who does the booking [show up] at an open-mic," says Warren. "But he's there, and he's actively part of the comedy community." Be sure to bring your A-game.
