Simply Elegant's downtown location certainly lives up to its name: Built in 1906 as a piano showroom, the space at Olive and North Tenth streets boasts marble floors, ten-foot mirrors and a graceful, arched ceiling. But who has time to look at the architecture with a selection of wedding dresses this good? Owner Annette Karsch stocks seven full lines, mostly in the $1,000 to $2,500 range, as well as shoes, accessories, veils and jewelry. The shop also recently added a loft upstairs devoted to bridesmaids, and Karsch even carries tuxedos — her clients' grooms get special pricing. Alterations at this shop are done by seamstresses (which she says is becoming rarer and rarer). The store draws brides from both sides of the river, and Karsch works hard to accommodate them: One recent bride could only come in on weekends, when the shop is closed, but Karsch met with her by special appointment. "We bend over backwards," she says. "So I think we have the best service. But I'm biased."
