Forget about learning the calendar at the Great Harvest Bread Company. Just remember this: closed on Sunday. Every other day brings a changing array of dense, honorable loaves that are worthy of sandwiches, toasting or snacking. A couple of styles do make daily appearances, such as the versatile honey whole-wheat and the sinfully sweet cinnamon swirl. (Good luck getting the latter all the way home intact.) Others — such as the "Dakota" (pumpkin and sunflower seeds, corn millet), the challah and the "Breakfast Blast" (oats, cinnamon chips, dates) — show up weekly. Lucky is the shopper who arrives on the day (every two weeks) the "Olivette Olive Bread" gets pulled from the oven. While Great Harvest is a national chain, this outpost is a locally owned franchise that loves to treat its customers with free samples of the day's special loaf, as well as a frequent-buyer's card. Insist on knowing the schedule? The website has the full rundown, but be sure to check back on a regular basis, as it changes monthly.
